Some of the most important things you should know about insurance
How much coverage should I have on my personal auto?
Auto insurance provides coverage for physical damage (comprehensive & collision) and liability. The minimum limits for the state of Arizona are 15K/30K/10K ($15,000 bodily injury per person; $30,000 bodily injury per occurrence; $10,000 property damage per occurrence). However, this amount of coverage usually is not enough in the event of an accident. Higher limits should usually be chosen when buying an insurance policy.
Arizona requires that every motor vehicle operated on roadways be covered by one of the statutory forms of financial responsibility, more commonly called liability insurance, through a company that is authorized to do business in Arizona. This requirement also includes golf carts, motorcycles and mopeds.
Minimum levels of financial responsibility are
- $15,000 bodily-injury liability for one person and $30,000 for two or more people.
- $10,000 property-damage liability.
What if I have to go to the Hospital and my Bill is more than $15,000 ?
What is uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage?
Uninsured motorist coverage is protection related to injuries received as a result of an uninsured, negligent driver. An uninsured driver is someone who did not have any insurance, had insurance that did not meet state-mandated minimum liability requirements, or whose insurance company denied their claim or was not financially able to pay it. A hit and run driver also counts as uninsured as it relates to bodily injury (UMBI).
Underinsured motorist coverage is protection related to injuries received from an accident where the other driver is at fault has coverage limits too low to cover your expenses. Underinsured drivers purchase only the minimum coverage required by law, which in some states isn’t much. For example, Arizona only requires drivers to carry $15,000 per person and $30,000 per incident of bodily injury liability coverage. If a driver with low coverage limits causes you to sustain a serious injury, it is possible that the available insurance benefit won’t pay all your medical expenses. This is the definition of an “underinsured” driver.
Should you be involved in an accident where the “at fault” driver lacks adequate liability insurance, your own underinsured motorist coverage covers you.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage refers to separate but similar coverages:
This ONLY applies if you add this coverage to your policy many companies remove this part of the coverage to save you money. How much coverage should I have on my home?
You should cover at least 100% of the rebuilt cost. This will insure that you are covered in the event of a major loss. While it’s never fun to think about the possibility of a major loss, it is something you should always be prepared for.
How much would it cost to rebuild my home at today’s prices?
Your home is probably the single largest investment you’ll ever make. By insuring your home, you are helping to protect your investment.
Estimating the cost to rebuild your home will help you decide the amount of insurance you’ll want to purchase. The primary factors that’ll determine the cost to rebuild your home include:
- Local construction costs
- The square footage of your home (and the number of bathrooms and other rooms)
- The type of exterior wall construction – frame, masonry (brick or stone) or veneer
- The type of roof
- The number of floors (one to four stories, bi-level or split level)
- Special features like attached garages, fireplaces, exterior trim and arched windows
- Quality of materials and finishes throughout the home
What is the difference between “actual cash value” and “replacement cost”?
When your property is damaged by a peril covered by your insurance, it will be paid on either an actual cash value or replacement cost basis. Replacement cost is the current cost to replace the property. Actual cash value is replacement cost less depreciation, which basically means the actual market cost of the damaged item if you would have sold it right before it was damaged
What is renters insurance, and why would I need it?
Renters insurance is usually required if you live in an apartment or rental house. This provides coverage for your personal property. In the event of a loss, the owner/landlord’s insurance would not cover your personal property unless the loss was their responsibility. Anyone who leases an apartment or house should consider renters insurance to make sure they’re protected.
